MITCH DEAN’S SONG LYRICS

Here you’ll find a bunch of lyrics to my songs. From my debut EP ‘Suburban Speakeasy’ through to my current album.

MUDDY WATER

INTRO:
Taken by the devils sway
One by one they slipped away
5 souls lost to fear and doubt
Muddy water hides the lies till the tide runs out

VERSE 1
With the sound of running feet
Church bell rang, they gathered in the street
To the banks, where the children play
A shadow drifting by the lake

Now who’d a thought it might be true
Up and gone, left without a clue
Saw a town stumble to its knees
But then they all rise up to avenge these evil deeds

CHORUS:
There’s a rumour floating around
Like a stranger in this town
Won’t end till they cut him down
Muddy water hides the lies till the tide runs out

VERSE 2:
Underneath the moon lit sky
Every man holding rifles high
Wont rest till the deed is done
They call for vengeance, they call for blood

On a road, on the edge of town
Bloodied hands, falling to the ground
Lay a man with guilt upon his face
Laid them all to rest in a muddy water grave

OUTTRO:
As the crowd gathers round
A lowly breeze, the only sound
Never strung a man so high
Now we stand and wait, till the tide runs out tonight

BEFORE THE FALL

VERSE 1:
Here together, like birds of a feather
We’d watch the hours slip by
Without warning, Clouds were forming
Got rain falling from the sky
Seasons change out here anyway
Like a long lost friend
Turns his back on you
Before he turns to you again

CHORUS:
Before the Fall, Before the Freeze
Before the River meets the sea
I never thought id ever get to meet someone like you

Before the Fall, Before the Freeze
Before the cool Autumn Breeze
There’s never been a better time to tread the morning dew
Because that’s when the sun breaks through

VERSE 2:
You don’t need to ask nobody
When you can call on me
A believer, a bout of cabin fever
To find some lasting harmony
You Dam it up, the whole damn river
Push it down deep inside
You’ll find a fear, shed a tear
Before the turning of the tide

CHANGE:
I know I’ve never said it this clearly
As sure as the seasons will greet me
I just want you near me
When the years get cruel
And no light breaks through
Well maybe you might need me too

SOMETHING TO YOU

VERSE 1:
well i camped by the door in the hope you’d say more than hello
I’ve seen leaves on the trees melt at your feel like snow
And it nothing for you, when it 5:32, I’m sleeping and your far away
My eyes feel like lead, your words softly said break the say

CHORUS:
If it’s worth the climb, then tell me what’s on your mind
Sometimes there’s no reason why hearts become entwined
And if its hung on the line, well maybe its finally dry
But it means something to you
But it means something to you
And if it means something to you
You know it means something to me

VERSE 2
So we followed that track and wound right back at the start
Building walls so tall with only words that come from the heart
We were sober insider, barely alive
Till we danced and fell on the floor
When a voice in your head whispered and said
tell me more

LIKE A THIEF

VERSE 1:
Well what can I say, I was so far away, while I just sat there listening
The rope tying me to the shore, you just gave me more, and I felt so uplifted
There was no light to keep me away from rocks on the bay, I’m carelessly drifting

CHORUS:
Like a thief she can steal a single moment from your mind
Bend the truth so you find, the lies left behind
She’ll lead you to the very edge, leave you hanging on every word she says

VERSE 2:
These cards to carefully dealt, leaving me on the shelf so bitter and twisted
The case against me is so strong, the ground that I’m on has suddenly shifted
But what do they understand, the reasons not easily gifted

CHANGE:
What kind of world do I see, where all is taken so easily
Fool me twice like they say, but who’s ashamed

VERSE 3:
Now it’s hats off to you, you carried it through and there it will stay
With the dirt from the hole that you dug, swept under the rug and hidden away
And now I’m left here to guide the anger inside as bright as a flame
See it flicker away

SHELTER FROM THE RAIN

VERSE 1:
When the night is nearly through, And it’s all come back to you
So tell me what to do
Strike my pen upon the page, There seems to much to say
At least for your eyes anyway

PRE:
When all I ever did was hide, you’d see the truth behind the lies
Just take a step to catch your breath, because you know the reason why

CHORUS:
When all I ever asked of you
Was a little shelter from the rain
I stepped inside, eyes open wide
Not knowing what I’d see tonight
When the clouds no longer hide the pain
Is there shelter from the rain?

VERSE 2:
When all is said and done, surrendered to the gun
To slowly come undone
Tell yourself it’s not the way
Take heed of yesterday, now it feels so far away

CHANGE
So let it rain, let it pour
Till it runs down your door
Let it wash away the ever rolling path

When that sky got so dark
That you don’t know where you are
And every step may be your last

FACE IN A LONG LONG LINE

VERSE 1:
There’s a picket line on the lawn

Families screamin, lives are torn
There’s nowhere left to go
Along with everyone you know

Rumours turn to tears
Nightly news relays the fears
Now who can hold the torch
Who can stand and keep watch

CHORUS:
Now I don’t know what to say this time
Just a face in a long long line
Who’s to say, that we’ll be doing fine
You know it never was in us to call it time

VERSE 2:
So many had stood tall
Spent years inside those walls
Now the gates are all locked down
With the heart of this town

Should we have seen the move
Those who knew were hiding clues
The handshakes still go on
It burns deep when we got none

VERSE 3:
Page One was holding true
A week later just old news
If there’s one thing I’ve found
This world keeps spinning round

Some are staring at the stars
Some are moving, packing cars
There were those who couldn’t leave
The ones who refused to believe

BROKEN WING

VERSE 1:
There she lay, A broken wing
Nobody could fix this thing
Hate to say, but you’ll be here a while
Forget all the lessons learnt till now

No point this time, in saving face
A thing of beauty just fell from grace
This little bird, she’s bound to sing
So stay a while, and be home for spring

CHORUS:
She’ll need a place to call her own
A place for healing her broken bones
We knew in time when that day would call
There’d be nothing there to break her fall
There’d be nothing there to break her fall

VERSE 2:
So there she lay, without a home
Came to ground just like a stone
You’d never know the tears she cried
This little bird held it all inside

CHANGE:
Moving sticks, and nesting twine
It comes together over time
Although its never what you’ve known
But now it’s home

There she lay, A broken wing
There’s nobody who could fix this thing

FAR ABOVE MY HEAD

VERSE 1:
No further I travel this night
The road grows dark and soon it falls from my sight
Distance, I fathom no more
The longer I walk the closer I am to your door

CHORUS
Far above my head I see a halo floating round
If I beg, I plead, get on my knees
Will it ever come to ground?
But it’s a long, yeah a long way down

VERSE 2:
Travellers, with tales in tow
Bring stories and warnings of many a fork in this road
Hoping, and holding tight
My faith in a candle, its flame making shadow take flight

CHANGE…
That feeling I get is hard to describe
And tethered to words that barely arrive
Over mountains and valleys so wide
To be by you side

No further I travel this night
The road grows dark and soon it falls from my sight

HIS FATHERS GUN

VERSE 1:
Roaming the streets like an only son
Holding on tight to his father’s gun
Hiding in the shadows till the moment slips away

His best friend Jackie by his side
Target of laughter all their lives
They only wished to see a smile start to fade

Heart beat racing, full of dread
Remembering words his father said
Grips a little tighter till he feels it start to sway

CHORUS
I guess he must have met the devil that night
Showed him the ropes, the door, the lights
Whispered in his ear as he slowly backed away

VERSE 2
And so it goes, that on that night
The headlights turned, he was paralysed
Finger on the trigger, now the edges start to fray

Took that thing right off his hip
He closed one eye and bit his lip
How the game changed with the pieces all in play

A cornered dog, a dead end street
With no way out will bear it’s teeth
He never believed he would take a life away

CHORUS
I guess he must have met the devil that night
Showed him the ropes, the door, the lights
Whispered in his ear as he slowly backed away

There he stood with a smoking gun
Now all he could do is turn and run
Not a moment would pass where he wouldn’t rue the day

VERSE 3:
That gun was kept under lock and key
They always do, they just break free
Don’t you dare, you’d hear his father say

Those Two boys never looked for fame
Whole town now would know their names
Nothing they knew would ever be the same

Dig a little deeper, and you’d find
This boy is not the killing kind
A moment of madness, the lines had blurred to grey

HOLDING BACK THE LEVEE

Intro:
Holding back the Levee, I Can’t let it loose

VERSE 1:
Oh lord would you believe
Got the whole town depending on me
Got the shakes in my arms, Feel an aching in my knees

Dark clouds closing in
I’m thinking boy I hope they can swim
Their words calling out, brings an aching from within

CHORUS
Holding back the Levee, I can’t let it loose
Holding back the Levee, I can’t let it loose
Give me the strength, carry me through
River pushing hard, rising like the truth
Holding back the Levee, I can’t let it loose
Holding back the levee, I can’t let it loose

VERSE 2:
From a bed of rock and stone
Worked its way to the valley below
That River don’t care, not a thought for where it goes

Hard rain came so fast
Time to run, long gone past
Would they have left if a warning had been known?

VERSE 3:
I see tears in their eyes
I see grown men staring to cry
Put their faith in sad and sorry levee wall

Is it in me, I don’t know
Give it all before I’d let go
Feel the weight bearing down on a ragged and weary soul

IT’S IN THE STREAM

VERSE 1:
Let me cast your eye back to a time before
Life was not consumed by worries anymore
When all the children played, they were happy in the streets
A time before the online and MTV
Now all the children scream, it’s in the stream

VERSE 2:
It was all we had, a black and white TV
Kids in town would gather round to watch the latest scene
We’d marvel at the beauty and fill our minds with dreams
Heaven knows, where water flowed it only dampened feet
Now all the children scream, it’s in the stream

CHORUS
Before you knew those banks got steep
That undertow has got you in too deep
Now we’re all drowning and far from free
Still all the children scream, it’s in the stream

VERSE 3:
There was racks of vinyl, there was old LP’s
Lines of fans with cash in hand, waiting for a treat
Would they even understand what this concepts means?
To hold the music in thier hands, consume it over weeks
Now all the children scream, it’s in the stream

VERSE 4
Now cast that eye forward and think what it means
A world so out of focus lost in other people’s dreams
Slowly the decay isn’t only in their teeth
The walls will fall and all we love is buried underneath
Now all the children scream, it’s in the stream

LET IT FALL

VERSE 1:
We’d plant the seed, watch it rise
Clear the way so the sun could shine
We’d catch the rain, god knows we tried
Until it reached out for the light

CHORUS:
How on earth did we let it grow so tall?
Let it fall, Let it fall
Now it casts a shadow that makes us feel so small
Let it fall

VERSE 2:
The slightest breeze, things weren’t right
One by one those leaves would die
That big old tree once reached so high
Now stood alone under the sky

CHANGE:
And now its bigger than us all, and it stands like this great dividing wall
If we knew, if we tried, don’t you leave it all inside
Let it fall

THE ONLY TWO

VERSE 1:
There’s much more to this binding
Than that ring we can’t afford to keep
And we can’t hide a thing, when the walls are paper thin
It only brings more doubting, can’t hear others shouting
Maybe it’s really only you and me

CHORUS:
Feels like we’re the only
Yeah we’re the only two
Feels like we’re the only
Yeah we’re the only two

VERSE 2
Maybe the Mountain’s getting steeper
This hole we’re in just feels so deep
And the songs that we sing, about unfortunate things
Remind us what it feels like, we know what it feels like
Come tomorrow, let’s just wait and see

CHANGE:
My my, what a fine line we walk in harmony
It’s true, we will make it through, still waters run so deep

WHAT CAN GO WRONG?

VERSE 1:
I remember, being told about this rainy day
Someone said to put those coins away
What can go wrong?

Got nothing, But the shoes tied onto our feet
Wishing for a pocket that’s not so deep
What can go wrong?

CHORUS
So take my hand, it’s filled up with dreams so grand
I promise I won’t let go
Now it’s time you and I stopped thinking about
What can go wrong?

VERSE 2:
Lay me, underneath silent stary skies
No one here would ever question why
What can go wrong?

And Maybe, I’ll try selling door to door
Or slave away on some old factory floor
What can go wrong?

CHANGE:
Building our dreams like a mountain so high
It’s all that we wanted, now don’t question why
Cautions been thrown, and the wind is riding high

Thrift shop counters, it’s all in the past
Just say you will, now the dye has been cast
Turning this once dark corner as blue as sky

VERSE 3:
Not running, like 2 thieves from all that we know
Town to town like some old travelling show
What can go wrong?

PLEASE DON’T WAKE ME

VERSE 1
Why we drove that night, I still don’t know why
I play it over and over again
Through thunder and rain, just you and me Jane
A picture no one could forget
Hand of fate upon us now, I’m hearing the sound
A car moving over the edge
Through flashing headlights, we fell through the night
And our story has come to an end

PRE
As the wheel tries to make its fight
I let it go, as i close my eyes

CHORUS
So let me drift here for a while
Just one moment with your smile
If this is a dream please don’t wake me from my sleep tonight

VERSE 2
When I’m walking through town, I hear voices so loud
Eyes burning holes in my head
Your dad’s whole world, when he lost his girl
Drove him to the bottle again
Sometimes I still see your ma, I know it’s so hard
I remind her of what can’t be said
We don’t know what to say, so we both turn away
In a motion so full of regret

CHANGE:
I let it slip
In that roadside final dance
Let it sway in the trees
As you slip right through my hands
